Genetic diversity and structure in Leishmania infantum populations from southeastern Europe revealed by microsatellite analysis

Background: The dynamic re-emergence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in south Europe and the northward shift to
Leishmania-free European countries are well-documented. However, the epidemiology of VL due to Leishmania
infantum in southeastern (SE) Europe and the Balkans is inadequately examined. Herein, we aim to re-evaluate and

Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by protozoan parasites which belong to the genus
Leishmania. Important clinical manifestations of leishmaniasis include cutaneous
leishmaniasis (CL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Currently, leishmaniasis occurs in all
continents with the exception of Antarctica and is considered to be endemic in 88
countries. About 90% of cases with leishmaniasis occur in the tropics or subtropics but
the disease is also endemic in the Mediterranean area including countries like

Leishmaniases in Greece

During the last 35 years, visceral leishmaniasis has spread in Greece with autochthonous human cases appearing in 41 of the 54 prefectures. The occurrence of the disease was mapped and related to dog seropositivity, environmental and geospatial risk factors. Average dog seropositivity was 22.1% and positive animals were found in 43 of 54 prefectures.

Re-Emergence of Visceral and Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in the Greek Island of Crete

Leishmaniases are vector-borne diseases transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. Three species of Leishmania are found in the Mediterranean basin: Leishmania infantum, the most common species responsible for both visceral (VL) and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL); Leishmania major, found in North Africa and Middle East causing CL; Leishmania tropica with a limited presence in Europe, causing CL.
